È stata una vera e propria gara ad eliminazione quella che si è svolta venerdì e sabato nei Paesi Baschi e in Navarra, valida come seconda prova stagionale del Campionato del Mondo FIA Energie Alternative. Il IV° Eco Rallye Vasco Navarro, che vedeva al via trentanove equipaggi, si è dimostrato infatti estremamente impegnativo, e più di un affermato pilota si è trovato a pagare caro ogni più piccolo errore. Alla fine i due equipaggi italiani presenti sono riusciti a portare a casa importantissimi punti per la classifica mondiale: la scuderia toscana Imega-Boninsegni, con i piloti Guido Guerrini ed Emanuele Calchetti (su Alfa Romeo Mito a gpl), ha centrato il sesto posto, chiudendo la gara sei secondi davanti alla coppia romagnola Liverani-Strada (su Fiat Croma a biodiesel), condizionata da un leggero incidente durante la prima prova speciale.
La vittoria è andata ai baschi Maykel del Cid e Carlos García su Toyota Prius, davanti alla Ford Focus a etanolo della coppia Torrontegui – Fernández. Per Guerrini-Calchetti primato di categoria per quanto riguarda i veicoli a combustibile gassoso, mentre nei veicoli puramente elettrici ha primeggiato l’ex campione europeo di rally di velocità, il catalano Antonio Zanini Sans, su Mitsubishi i-MiEV, davanti alla coppia basca Jesús Echave – Juanan Delgado su Nissan Leaf.
La competizione si è articolata in due giornate e ha visto la copertura complessiva di 530 chilometri (ben 230 dei quali componevano dieci prove speciali). Luogo di partenza e arrivo è stata la capitale dei Paesi Baschi, Vitoria-Gasteiz, che quest’anno si fregia del titolo di “European Green Capital” proprio per l’attenzione alle tematiche ambientali.

A questo punto la carovana del mondiale si sposta in Italia: la terza gara FIA si svolgerà infatti questo fine settimana in Alto Adige. La corsa sarà valida anche come prima prova del Campionato nazionale CSAI Energie Alternative.
